Everyone I know who has seen this little gem of an action comedy, has great affection for it and yet I was surprised recently taking to a film fan friend of mine who‘d never seen it. Midnight Run fits into this category for me. I could easily list any number of films, some of which I‘ve already posted about on this blog, which despite having great standing amongst fans, either don’t seem to have widespread recognition or have been forgotten about in the intervening years between their initial cinema release and now. Sometimes it’s not about a film being particularly underrated amongst those who know it, but about how many people who seem not to have seen of it. Suddenly Jack’s ‚midnight run’ (slang for an easy job) turns into a cross country pursuit as he desperately tries to make his deadline and manage to keep him and Mardukas alive in the process. and rival bounty hunter, Marvin (John Ashton) all wanting to grab ‚the Duke’ themselves. proves more difficult than expected with the Mob, The F.B.I. Walsh finds ‚the Duke’ in New York and quickly apprehends him. by midnight on Friday otherwise, the bail bondsman who hired Walsh has to pay the whole $450,000 bail.

Walsh needs to have Mardukas back in L.A. Unfortunately, there is no news if this original cut will ever be released on DVD.Ex-cop turned bounty hunter, Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) is given the job of tracking down white collar criminal, Jonathan ‚the Duke‘ Mardukas (Charles Grodin), who skipped bail after stealing money he was laundering for a Vegas Mob boss, Jimmy Serrano (Dennis Farina) and gave it to charity. However, with the tabloid craze of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, the studio forced director Brest into deleting almost 40 minutes of footage and re-writing / re-shooting many sequences to make it a romantic comedy. It has been claimed that this cut had Larry being killed at the end by Christopher Walken's character. This all ties into the rumor that Martin Brest had an original, much more dark and violent 160 minute version of the film.
